HOW I DECIDED ON THE TITLE:
TRAVELLING THE ROAD OF PEACE AND HAPPINESS.
As an accidental white, male, Australian, Christian, Catholic, there is plenty for me to write about. I use the term 'accidental' because, like everyone else, I had no choice in the labels I inherited, with all the expectations that go with those labels. All of us start from our accidental beginning and gradually try to discover who we really are.
I write about people and relationships, not religion. However, spirituality cannot be excluded from discussions about human relationships and most societies are based on religious beliefs. While researching this book I discovered that physics, biology, atheism, and all the major religions agree on two closely related points. First, in regard to life in general, we should devote all our physical, mental, and spiritual energy to discovering the truth, even if that means changing centuries-old beliefs and values. Second, the equality of all people is a social truth and that truth should guide us in setting up the social systems we live in and the rules we live by. To me, that means the people who choose equality as the base for their relationships are travelling the road of peace and happiness.
In Travelling the Road of Peace and Happiness I accept the challenge to show how a movement towards equality in relationships develops a state of dynamic peace and happiness. Family life is chosen as the setting for explaining the nitty gritty about how equality works because all of us have experienced some kind of family life. This means the book is particularly suited for parents preparing children for 21st century living. But it is about much more than parenting because, as adults, we can use the same tools to improve relationships in every role we play in life. Everyone experiences conflict of some kind every day, and each conflict can become serious, or be resolved peacefully, depending on how we respond to it.
I define "conflict” as a clash of needs, beliefs or values. Some small, some not so small. The same dynamics and principles are involved in conflicts regardless of whether the setting is in the home, school, work, or play.
